Writing in Books? Only in Sharpie.

Your Story is Permanent

One of the most “subversive” parts of “What Is Your Story?” is the simple, emotional action of writing in a book. Through life, books are revered as precious objects that are to be displayed on shelves, things to be handled with care. What if that idea of reverence was reversed? What if a person’s story could be put on as high of a pedestal as a published book? We believe it is just as important. The stories that shape us in unique and connecting ways are the spines to our communities and sense of selves. So, flip through the pages of a used book and spill the things of your heart that make you tick. Use sharpie, it’s permanent, writing with one shows your words hold power. Your words are important.

These are Reused, right?

Okay, so you feel bad about writing in books. No worries, they have taken a while to get to you, but know they are coming from places all over. These books were loved and worn before they arrived in our possession and into your hands. They were looking for homes all over and they found you. The books we use for this exhibit are fully donated, fully used, and never brand new. We look in places where they will be left and allow them to come to us. They have lived in libraries, homes, and in many places far and wide, but we believe that in preserving our personal stories, we are also able to preserve these books and provide new life in between worn pages. So pick up a book, love it by making art. Don’t be shy.

Where Do They Go?

The stories received are anonymously displayed and shared in the digital exhibit; however, you never know where the stories can be taken. We say this to mean that the stories are living and breathing, they are located within our very souls and take life when shared with others. We have no idea how a story could resonate with someone, how lives could be impacted just simply by using words. Words have power, and yours are no different. Give your story legs, breath and a heartbeat, share, and know that you are not left on an island.
